Hungry and in an unknown town. We just walked thru Chinatown in New York and came upon a group of people waiting outside this place and got curious. I'm really glad we did. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a "shared" table but it was totally worth it! It couldn't be more authentic. Lots of Chinese and other ethnics happily chatting outside while they wait. It was really crowded and bustling inside and there were multiple steaming carts being pushed around by nice little ladies. We made new friends with the people who shared our table. We had a separate check and was served hot tea right away. Hubby & I ordered steamed tripes, chicken feet, rice porridge, shrimps and Chinese donuts wrapped in red rice rolls. They were all delicious!! For dessert we got ourselves coconut black buns and fresh durian mochi. Omgee!! It was so soft, Creamy and delicious! I wish I had gotten a 2nd order. I can't wait to go back.

Not a place where you're going to receive the best service ever but if you want good food and are ok with a no frill kinda place, this is for you. There may be a long wait on weekends so go early and dine in with the seniors or deal with the wait around 10-12pm. You'll get your food but their service workers will bump into you without even apologising and be quick to clean the table before/while you're trying to leave but it is a dimsum restaurant so whatever. Food is great - love the durian mocha and beef ribs. Also loved the tripe and sticky rice so definitely on par.

Reliable spot for an authentic dim sum experience in the heart of Chinatown, complete with the classic push carts. At prime dim sum times, be prepared to wait upwards of 45 min or more and to share a table with strangers if you have a smaller party! The food quality maaay be hit or miss but mostly hits and overall very decent - you're there for the experience and atmosphere anyway. On my most recent visit I really loved the "red rice" steamed rolls and shrimp steamed rolls - they were soo fresh. It's helpful if you know some Chinese to communicate, but it's not completely necessary. Definitely a go-to!

The staffs are friendly, it is very busy on a Sunday morning for dim sum. You have to go early to get seat. The dim sum cart ladies will push cart and you can order food fresh. Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambience: 4/5

If you're looking for some authentic old-school dim sum with the Chinese ladies pushing the carts, then House of Joy is definitely one of the best places in NYC for that. As a result though, it also happens to be one of the most popular, so be prepared for some crowds and wait times. Luckily, the wait wasn't too bad though - we came on a Saturday around noon and only had to wait about 15 min (they didn't have a great waiting area though and you have to stay there to hear them call your number). Once we got our table, we realized that for smaller groups (like for 2 people) you will have to share one of the large tables with another small group. It's slightly awkward but honestly doesn't detract from the experience that much. Now as for the actual food, its your classic selection of Chinese dim sum dishes, and of course the cart ladies are a big plus if you're a dim sum purist like myself. - Shrimp chang fen: one of my favorites and theirs did not disappoint - Bean curd rolls: slightly on the oily side but still good - Salty egg yolk puffs: this was one of my favs, as the runny egg yolk inside was truly delicious with a sweet and salty flavor combo - Siu mai: can't go wrong with this dim sum classic - Durian mochi: the outside dough was a bit too mushy but the durian inside is good if you're a fan of the "fragrant" fruit - Coconut pudding with osmanthus jelly: delicious dessert that is half pudding and half jelly, offering two yummy complementary flavors The food here is also great value, as we got all of these for $38 (pre-tax/tip). The place itself is huge with tons of large tables, all of which were filled for Saturday lunch. The restaurant is clean with ballroom style decor. There are plenty of friendly staff around, so you can easily flag one down whenever you need anything and they will be happy to assist. Overall, for the authentic dim sum experience with tasty dishes and a lively atmosphere, House of Joy is a must-try place in NYC's Chinatown.

The name of this place is a double entendre, but let's not digress. This place is very good for dim sum. It is packed 7 days a week. Excellent service. You are greeted with a smile. Large round tables, so bring your friends. Old school dim sum with ladies pushing carts to each table where you select your tapas style small dishes. Great variety. This place is reasonably priced.

If you like and want to try pushcart dim-sum, come this place. Most of local Chinese in china town recommend this place and you can see real china town daily life. Ambience is noisy Chinese banquet place, Bet 10am-1pm probably long line, wait 15-20 min and served at shared table But After 1 pm will be more quiet and slow. But cart service will be finished by 3 pm. Food was excellent real Chinese dim sum, typical portion. It's bit raised price cause New York but still decent . I like pan fried stuff especially chive dumpling and turnip cake Tea is free, pls see menu and if you can't see on the cart, ask them what you want to eat, then the cart ladies bring them.

I lied. If you've ever read any of my other reviews of dim sum restaurants around the world and US, I said before that Harbor City in Seattle was my favorite in the US. Nope. This is the best I've had and my new favorite. It has great, speedy service, with the staff attentive to your tea levels and the full feeling and expectation of a tea banquet hall like you'd find in Hong Kong. The food was delicious. We had several dishes with chun fun and they were light and toothsome. It's been a few weeks since I last had it, and it was still memorable. If you've never had a true Cantonese dim sum banquet hall experience, you'll get the carts, you'll get the hand written/stamped tickets, you'll get the sharing of a table with strangers because you're not there as a party of 12. Come hungry, leave happy.

Food 9/10 Very fulfilling dim sum spot. The best traditional carts with the ladies driving around. Their liu sha bao was quite good, but I am sad their sesame balls were cold. The pork stomach, beef and sticky rice were sold. Honestly everything was exactly what I was looking for when I crave dim sum. Atmosphere 8/10 Cleaner than other dim sum spots around. Service 8/10 Everyone is super nice and straight to the point, which I really appreciate. No fuss no frills.
